The Teaching Artist Assistant in Urban Artisans works collaboratively with the Teaching Artist to prep materials for class, assist with facilitating instruction, aid students, and clean materials and the studio after class. See below for a description of the Teaching Assistant’s responsibilities.

Job Duties:

• Prep materials and studio: Assist the Teaching Artist with setting up the work area, organizing tasks for participants, and ensuring all needed tools and supplies are ready.

• Assist with facilitating instruction: The Teaching Artist is the teaching lead and directs all instruction. The Teaching Assistant models listening and helps participants focus and work. The Assistant can also help the Teaching Artist to make changes to the plan as needed, such as collecting additional or different supplies for students who need an adaptation. 

• Aid students: The Teaching Assistant is available to offer more individualized assistance and troubleshooting as needed. The Teaching Artist may assign the Assistant to work with specific participants or float between students to help as needed.

• Clean and complete end of day tasks: The Teaching Artist and Assistant work together to facilitate clean up with the participants. This means assigning clean up tasks and helping participants complete those tasks. Once the learning time ends, the Teaching Artist and Assistant work together to prep work for bisque/glaze fire carts, wrap up materials, put clean tools away, finish projects that need attention, review goal progress for the day, and make notes for the next session.

Success in this Role Looks Like:

• Teamwork: Collaborate effectively with the Teaching Artist to position students for success.

• Student support: Work intentionally with students and problem solve through differentiating instruction and adapting tools and supplies. Must be comfortable working in an inclusive environment with students with and without disabilities.

• Studio and learning management: Provide assistance to the Teaching Artist and participants to help ensure learning objectives for Urban Artisans are met.

• Artistic knowledge and growth: Share your expertise and knowledge with students about how to showcase creativity, quality and craftsmanship in their work.

Schedule: The desired start date for the project is January 2027 with a duration of 8 weeks. This program has a fixed schedule of 9am- 12pm Monday through Thursday. This Teaching Assistant position will either occur on Wednesday or Thursday, depending on the chosen candidate’s availability. There will be an orientation and training day(s) prior to the start of the program.

Compensation: ArtMix Teaching Assistants are paid $25/hour during teaching hours. Additional prep time outside of teaching hours are compensated at $15/hr.

In addition, the Assistant will participate in an Orientation and training day(s) in early January and wrap up days in mid-March. Staff will coordinate these days and times with the Teaching Assistant’s availability.

ArtMix is currently accepting proposals for your services in ceramic education for our Enroute ArtMix Studio Fellowship open studio program. Enroute is a full-day, inclusive open studio program designed specifically for artists with disabilities. This program’s purpose is to create a self-directed, choice-based environment where artists with disabilities can work independently, develop their unique creative voice, and engage meaningfully with the broader community. This pilot provides emerging and professional artists with disabilities the opportunity to grow creatively, develop their portfolios, and pursue self-directed careers in the arts.
